Efforts of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights in Addressing Human Trafficking in Southeast Asia (2019–2025)
Main Article Content
Abstract
Human trafficking has become one of the major problems faced globally, with the number of victims increasing every year. One of the regions most affected is Southeast Asia, which serves both as a transit point and one of the largest suppliers of human trafficking in the world. Women and children are the primary victims of this crime. ASEAN, as an organization formed by Southeast Asian countries, established the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) to promote human rights and to work toward reducing the number of human trafficking victims in the region. Over time, during the period from 2010 to 2015, although AICHR had to adhere to the principle of the ASEAN Way, it continued to make various efforts to curb transnational crimes occurring in Southeast Asia, particularly in the issue of human trafficking.
